To answer the question that many have asked, yes there will be Harbour Lights regional events in 2008. There are two under consideration. One will be in the Great Lakes area. The other being considered is in the New Orleans area. This post is to get some feedback concerning the New Orleans possibility.
When we originally looked at New Orleans, the concept was that participants would be able to help with the rebuilding of the New Canal Light. A change in plans has happened and New Canal has been completely dismantled, the salvaged parts to be used in the reconstruction of the light. We would probably be allowed to see the parts of the light that have been salvaged and also receive information on the project from the folks doing it. The reconstruction may have begun by the time frame of the regional event.
I would also envision visiting other lights on the Gulf Coast, and possibly setting up a boat tour from the Mobile area to view Sand Island and Middle Bay Lights. There are other lights in the New Orleans area that are viewable.
Especially for those who have not been to New Orleans, this is a fascinating city to visit. From its history to the architecture to Bourbon Street for those so inclined. Walking thru the Farmer’s Market and stopping for a beignet at Café du Monde is a wonderful way to pass the time. Visiting the French Quarter, the Garden District, the plantations in the area. If great food interests you, there are so many fantastic places to eat, both internationally famous and just great local cooking. It just goes on and on.
The time frame for this event would be the first half of June.
What I need to know is whether or not you would be interested in attending such an event, one that combined a Harbour Lights regional, lighthouse visits and great vacation location. I am not looking for negatives, the “why isn’t there a regional planned for my neighborhood?” questions. You can email me with those questions and I will be glad to respond directly to you.

The Bradys are interested in both if I can get the vacation days off in June for the New Orleans one..

Depending on my vacation time, I'd be interested in NOLA. There are many opportunities to help with rebuilding if not the lighthouse.
Adding on a couple of days to help would appeal to me. Our church has a connection to a ninth ward church and I'm sure we could find a use for our helping hands for members of their congregation -- even if it's just a few people who want to volunteer while on vacation.

Dave I think New Orleans is an excellent choice. In the South and closer to our Midwest collectors. Also there would be lighthouses that probably most have not seen.
Good chance I would go. But don’t know for sure. Like most, the closer to home the event the more guarantee of going.

Much as I'm dying to go to NOLA, don't think I'll be able to make it. Too much going on around then, and I can't really drive there either (and can't rent a car for 7 years).
BUT...Great Lakes...if it were between early July-mid August, I'd consider it. Depending on if we're talking Duluth or the St. Lawrence.

I would love to go. Is this a weekend trip? Might need a room mate who would like to split a room. Do you know what month the other trip (Great Lakes) would take place in?

New Orleans might be a good place for a Regional. MJ and I will probably only be able to do one of the Regionals this year (depending on the time frame). We are interested in hearing more.

I would be interested in both the New Orleans and the Great Lakes Regionals. But like everyone else, more specifics are needed. Let us know, please.

Dave,
New Orleans would be great for me. The sooner I know the details the better. I can change some of my vacation days. As long as someone else have not already put in for the days.

Have vacationed in the New Orleans area twice, and enjoyed the French Quarter, etc. June is a busy month for many....graduations, weddings, Father's Day, Michigan 400 and can't forget our annual Bloomington Gold Corvette Show, and with all that and more, all needed information is greatly appreciated as soon as the plans are set! GREAT LAKES!! Date? Place? Lighthousing?

The reason this was posted was to gauge the interest before I invested a multitude of hours trying to work out details and make arrangements. For the time being, NO the first half of June is as much as I can provide. June is an off season for the area, so costs shouldn't be too bad. Mid-June to August is incredibly hot and humid, then you are in hurricane season until October or later.
The Great Lakes outing would in all probability either be in the April-May or September-October time frame.

John and I would love to attend at least one of these events. If NO is the first part of June, I would prefer the Great Lakes in the fall. The more planning time I have in advance gives me a better chance to try and use frequent flyer miles.

I would love to attend but I have to consider my other half. Traveling more then a few hours would put Amy in the hospital with her back problems, not to mention motel/hotel room beds.

I wouldn't go anywhere near New Orleans in June. The Great Lakes in April-May (going back to SC again) is out as well as in Sep-Oct.

New Orleans would be a wonderful opportunity for me, since I live only 4 or 5 hours from there. Obviously, it's a little too early for me to be able to say whether I could make it or not, (love those work schedules) but I would have a good chance, while there wouldn't be a chance I could head to a northern location.

Has Seattle been considered? A great selection of lighthouses, a great summer climate, a beautiful city. I'd go for this over hot and sticky New orleans in a heartbeat.

Dave, We feel there are too many things going on in early June to go to New Orleans. Martha's Vineyard is having a lighthouse challenge and there is another in Maine. NELL also will have it's spring meeting at that time.

Also, for some of us in Michigan, school's not out until mid June. Late June thru mid August would give us a possible chance to come. NOLA is a very interesting idea tho!

These both sound like interesting places to visit lighthouses. Dave always does a great job with these events. I have not seen any details on the Martha's Vineyard event yet. Does anyone have dates, etc.

Whenever looking at areas for a regional event many things are taken into account. Some might include what the HL product line will be for the year; what benefits or challenges might be presented by a given area; where people might be willing to travel among other considerations. Dates are always challenging - can't come up with a date that works for everyone, unfortunately. In the case of NO, the first half of June is about as late as you can go before it turns into a sauna.

There are lighthouses still standing in LA. In NO itself there is the Port Ponthartrain Light (sometimes called the Milneburg Light) on the grounds of UNO. There is also Southwst Reef, now displayed on land in Morgan City and Sabine Pass on the LA/TX border. Tchefuncte River Light can be seen from land on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain.
There are also several off shore lights still vertical, or at least partially vertical.
It is looking like we will be able to visit Sabine Pass Light. I would also try to work out at least a stop past the Southwest Reef Light. Port Pontchartrain has to be a drive by - somewhat of a nasty situation with snakes all over the property.....

I like the New Orleans locale since we have not seen any of the lights in that area. Been to the city several times so not as interested in that as lighthouses, lighthouses and more lighthouses! The only thing we are not sure of is the date. Keep us posted.

I would suggest Savannah as a meeting place instead of New Orleans. I been to both places recently. Most of the lights in the New Orleans area were leveled by Katrina. The Canal Light was almost destroyed and has been take down awaiting reconstruction. Savannah has two lights in the immediate area Tybee and Cockspur. In southern South Carolina you have with in an easy drive, Harbor Town,Hunting Island,Morris Island and Charleston Lights. South towards Florida, St Simons, Amelia Island and St Johns River Lights. I have visited all these lights. Art

Is there anyone that is planning to do this trip have any idea about seeing some other lights after or before the weekend? If so can you give me some of your ideas and what state and lights are possible from where we are. Thinking about a few extra days of lighthousing. I know Dave has not finalized anything yet. Just doing some daydreamming.

It now appears that the regional will be on Saturday, June 7th. I will be sending an email to those who have expressed an interest to help me plan.
As more information is available I will post it and those who have indicated an interest will receive email updates.

Things are coming along nicely for the group that plans to attend and participate in the New Orleans regional. We will have an onsite dealer that will have both signing event and regional event pieces. The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation will be that dealer. The really neat thing is that the profits made from these sales will be added to the fund to rebuild New Canal. Another way you can help! Once we have a procedure worked out for ordering the pieces I will post that information.

Anyone else as excited about the New Orleans Regional as I am?
This will be my first regional, it is still two months away and I am beside myself. I look forward to riding around with Kay and Fran and getting to meet everyone else who is going to attend. The excitment hasn't quite rub off on my husband yet but I did convince him to go with me.

Are we going to be able to see all the lights left in Louisiana, the 3 in Alabama and the 3 in Mississippi. Are there any that we are not going to be able to see? Fran

Won't see the off shore lights in Louisiana or the Ship Island replica light in Mississippi (Can't find anything definitive that the replica was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina). The third Alabama Light (Mobile Point) is in pieces and in storage awaiting funds to restore it.

OPPS! Looks like Dave posted while I was typing this. Are we going to be able to see all the lights left in Louisiana No, but we will be seeing all that can be seen from land. There are three others in the very south part of LA that are only runins, and are so far out in the marsh wetlands offshore that they can only be seen from the air or by boat. But the cost to get out to them would be very very high and there isn't much left to see. Joe and I found a Fishing Charter that would take us out there back in Nov. 07 and the man wanted over $650. to take us out there in a little 3 man boat. We passed on his offer! However if Dave has planed for a stop at the Maritime Museum in Madisonville (I've heard no mention of this) there are replicas of all the Louisiana Lights that have ever been. These are great looking little replicas, and a must see in my opinion. The Keepers Quarters for the Tchefuncte River Light is also at the Museum. No, we will see two out of three. The third has been disasembled and is being stored elsewhere to be reconstructed at a later date. No, only one is still standing, Biloxi. Ship Island was destroyed during Katrina. And Round Island was destroyed several years ago by a hurricane.

Good thing we are going to see them now who knows what will be left in a couple of years. How sad.

There will be a limited supply of the regional event piece (Sapelo Front Range) available at the New Orleans regional. If you are not able to attend the event but would like a piece (signed by Bill) that can be arranged. Send me a note and I will tell you how to obtain one of the few. These will be the first ones in the country - it may still be a bit before the rest of the flock make it to these shores.
I am hoping we are able to help the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation quickly sell the pieces they will receive. The income they make from these pieces will go towards rebuilding the New Canal Light, so not only can you be the first on your block to have the regional piece, you will also help a major lighthouse restoration project. (And you will receive a regional button and an entry slip for a gold event piece to be used either in person at the Cedar Point regional or in the end of year mail in drawing.)
