I am passing on an urgent plea from the Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse Preservation Society to protect one of Michigan's oldest lighthouses. A matching grant to restore the light tower is coming due on June 30, 2003.

The total grant is for $110,000. This is the cost to redo the tower. They have to raise $17,000 by June 30, 2003 to meet a 3 for 1 grant. For every $1.00 they receive, it is matched with about $3.

Check out the pictures of the tower at this website. There are huge cracks in the tower.

I have already sent a check. Do you know how close they are now to their goal? I would hate to see them miss out on that matching money. frown
I may be able to write another check before June 30.

Sorry, I do not know how close they are to their goal. I just sent an email to Karen Melton at the Thunder Bay web site to find out.

I heard from Karen Melton. As of Thursday, they still need to raise $11,000 by June 30, 2003. The group has asked for an extention and have heard nothing so far.

At the Regional, a representative of Thunder Bay lighthouse said that they did get a one year extension on the matching grant.
