In light of the new release of this Harbour Lights piece, here are some pictures and information on Long Beach Bar Lighthouse (a.k.a. Bug Light). http://scroope.net/longislandlighthouses/longbeachbar.htm
Best views of this lighthouse are from the water if you can get in a boat...unless you like hiking down the beach!...I did this hike at the end of April from Orient Beach State Park...and it was still a little cool and a little windy at the time for that hike (not to mention that the park closed at 4:30 off season, and we just made it back in time!)...but we made it all the way to the end of Long Beach Bar...the lighthouse is still off the shore a little bit, but you are really close. I think it took about an hour out to the end and an hour back. If you get a nice day, it should be no problem...only I must warn that there is a spot where a storm must have hit the shore pretty hard...you have to make your way around a stretch of some fallen pine trees...and you even get to see a wrecked brick building and foundation partially in the water on the way...I would imagine if the tide is up, you'd definitely have to do some climbing over things...but the water is fairly calm there for the most part, so it's not like you'd have waves trying to drag you out to sea. Maybe you could just walk through the woods...although I don't know...it's pretty thick...or you could try the north side?...I don't know...this was my first attempt. I'll let you know more if I get to attempt the hike again some time this summer...hopefully I won't hit the other extreme, and it will be too hot for the hike.
