NPS Seeks Public's Views on Relocating Bodie Island LSS's - 01/26/07 05:27 PM

Please read...your opinion is needed. Info on how to contact the NPS regarding this is in the press release below. Also, my comments on the 3 choices are below.

In a press release from Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the public is invited to express opinions on the relocation of the Bodie Island Coast Guard and Life-Saving Station. The Park is examining 3 areas for the relocation:

1.) On Hwy 12 at the entrance of the Bodie Island Lighthouse

2.) On the sound side of the Bodie Island Lighthouse Grounds

3.) Whalebone Junction (where Hwys. 12 and 158 intersect)

You can see photographs of these buildings with an excellent history at Stephen's 'Beach Bum' site...

NPS Wants to Rescue 2 Life-Saving Stations

Of the 3 options, my preference would be #2 -sound side of the BILH grounds. You would go off of Rt. 12 through the entrance towards the lighthouse. Soundside would be the now wooded area to your right. The LSS buildings would become part of a really good historical experience.

There has been lots of talk in the most recent years of doing this, and making the current keeper's quarters a furnished keeper's quarters (this is a duplex- keeper & family on one side and assistant keeper & family on the other) and moving the store, office and museum to within part of the LSS buildings.

Then, the major portion of the LSS's (renovated) would be used towards LSS history.

I feel that the last place the NPS should move these buildings is to the Whalebone Junction (option #3)...a site of heavy traffic being directed in several directions with a history of many serious accidents, including fatalities.
Option#1 would also create a traffic problem if faced right on the two-lane RT. 12.

Following is the NPS proposal with info on contacting and sending public opinion...

RELOCATION OF HISTORIC BODIE ISLAND STRUCTURES

Date: January 11, 2007
Contact: Outer Banks Group, (252) 473-2111

Superintendent Mike Murray announced today the National Park Service (NPS)
will host a public scoping meeting on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the
Wright Brothers National Memorial, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina from
6:00 pm to 8:00 pm to share information and seek public comments on the
relocation of the Bodie Island Coast Guard and Lifesaving Stations. The
Coast Guard Station is the abandoned historic structure located near MP 22.
The adjacent Lifesaving Station is currently used as ranger offices by NPS
staff. This scoping meeting is part of the process to prepare an
Environmental Assessment (EA) pursuant to the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969.

During the public scoping period, which is not restricted to this meeting,
all interested persons will be given the opportunity to review and provide
comments on the proposed relocation to a new site within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The structures are currently in danger of destruction by
the ocean. Relocation will ensure the preservation of these historic
structures. Following relocation, the structures will be stabilized and
restored.

The Park has established a website for the purpose of providing information
regarding the proposed relocation project which will also provide the
opportunity to submit written comments regarding the proposal. Beginning
Wednesday, January 15, 2007 and ending Thursday, February 15, 2007, comments
can be submitted without attending the public meeting by visiting the Park's
PEPC website for current information on this subject and submit written
comments. The PEPC website address is:

http://parkplanning.nps.gov/

Choose "Cape Hatteras National Seashore", click on "Bodie Island Coast
Guard Station and Lifesaving Station Relocation" or you can address letters
to: Superintendent, Outer Banks Group, 1401 National Park Dr., Manteo, NC 27954. To ensure that the comments are included in the process, they should
be entered or postmarked by February 15, 2007.
Thanks,

Judy

News from NPS, reported by the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society...

Quote:
The comment period is over and the final decision will be made ~ May 1st.

The National Park (Cape Hatteras) is fairly certain that the final assessment will be for the Bodie Island Coast Guard Station and Life-Saving Stations to be relocated to the entrance of the lighthouse on Highway 12. They are surveying now and will begin the move this spring. The plans call for one of the buildings to be used as an interpretive center for all three structures (Coast Guard, Life-Saving Station and lighthouse).

Sounds like they made the best choice. Thanks for the update.

Great news! Do we know when they will get re-located? Will it be this year? I will be down there for a visit in July...wishful thinking!

Great news to hear. I visited them last April, and they were definitely hidden. It's great that they'll be brought "to the forefront"...as well as maybe making the entrance to Bodie a little harder to miss?

Now THAT'S wishful thinking. (You'll see in July, Bob.)

I'm gussing the 1876 station will be the interpretive centre, just because those tend to be a little smaller, just a general info thing. It's probably then easier to toss some informative panels in there, which I'm assuming is one big room. That leaves the larger later station for a more in-depth museum-type purpose, or as a residence, etc.

Just unsolicited conjecture...
