A picture is worth a thousand words, more or less? After you two left, Lori and Derith, I kept shooting for quite a while... Well past 10 PM. Here are a couple of the images I captured there at Grand Haven that night...

For the techno types, the outer light exposure was 4 minutes at f/11 using a 300 mm f/4 Nikkor AF-S lens. The inner light shot was a short 15 sec at f/8 using the same lens. Both shots were taken on Fuji Velvia. The greenish-blue of the pier lights is from them being mercury vapor, which records greenish-blue on Velvia.
